Did you watch The Snowman and the Snowdog shown on Channel 4 at Christmas time? It was wonderful. The amount of detail and hard work that went into producing the animation was mind boggling, and the result was outstanding. I particularly loved the journeys around London’s landmarks, the transitions were so smooth and flowing. To accompany the sequal to The Snowman, Channel 4 aired a documentary entitled, How The Snowman Came Back to Life showing the planning and background work of the animation along with an interview with Raymond Briggs. I didn’t have Raymond Briggs’ books as a child, and I think I was missing out so I purchased The Snowman and also Ethel & Ernest. The latter is a graphic novel Briggs’ published in 1998 telling the life story of his parents, from the moment they met in the 1920’s to their death in the 1970’s. It is so sweet, and humorous whilst being extremely sad. The novel truly makes you realise the power of pictures. I found it to be very inspiring.
You can still watch the documentary by following this link to 4oD: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-snowman-and-the-snowdog/4od#3458877
There’s only 8 days left so get watching!
